Mounting a Mantel to the Wall

Cut a board to fit the back of the mantel. A 1"x4" or a 2"x4" board works for most mantels. Measure your mantel to be sure you have the correct size board.

Strip the board down the middle with a cut of 40-50 degrees.

You should now have two boards, each with an angled edge.

Line the cut board up with the mantel and attach with wood screws are not too long as to go all the way through the mantel boards. Make sure you line up the board with the angled edge facing downwards.

Some mantels may require screws to be placed at angles so as not to puncture through the front of the mantels.

Make a level line on the wall, and attach the ledger board to the wall. Brick walls may require drilling.

Attach the ledger board with the point facing upwards.

Hang the mantel on the ledger board. It should fit securely, but does not need to fully engage the other half. Place 2-3 finish nails or a small amount of construction adhesive to keep it from being lifted off the ledger board.

Enjoy your new mantel.

NO POWER SAW?

If you do not have a power saw you can mount a 1x2 ,1x4, or 2x4 board to the wall and hang the mantel on the board. You will need to place 3-4 finish nails through the top of the mantel; pre drilling the holes would lessen the chance of damage to the mantel. This method will work but you may want to add construction adhesive behind the mantel to help secure it to the wall. The upside to this method is that it is much easier than the before mentioned method. The downside is that it is not as structurally strong, puts more stress on the top of the mantel, and does not pull the mantel as close to the wall.
